Why
are we doing this?
Probably for several reasons. Maybe one of them will make
sense to you.
-
First,
John
Wesley would have approved of it. He and his brother Charles were
the first Anglican priests in Georgia (the Episcopal Church comes from
the Church of England), and he believed that the church should be where
folk gather, preaching and celebrating and sharing their lives. Works
for us.
-
Second, it's a great way to spend a
Summer Sunday morning. The weather's (usually) great. Where else is the
normal choir a flock of Canada Geese? When's the last time the person
leading your prayers stopped to watch an osprey plunge and catch a fish?
(we watched too). We like the informality (we like formality too... a time
and a place for everything).
-
We get to worship with folk we wouldn't
otherwise. We've met the neatest people... from as near as next door,
and as far away as England... and Holland... From California and
Washington state and New Jersey. Kentucky and Virginia and the
Carolinas. We always get to see regular faces... and we always get to
meet someone new. Our world gets bigger, and that's a good thing!
-
Our congregation does grow
because of this. Oh, most of you have your own congregations, and that's
great. We're here for when you're on the lake. But we find that some
folk - after getting to know us and what we believe - follow us into
Cordele after the summer season is over. Some as friends. And some to
become members.
-
Mostly, we do this because we believe God
called us to do it. We'd probably each say it differently, but if you
asked us, you'd hear that the hard work brings more than tired feet...
it brings us a sense that we've done what we were supposed to do.
